          在世仅43年的艾撒拉（Sarah Flower Adams，1805-1848）有一次应牧师的邀请，根据《创世记》28：10-22的记载，写成了这首诗。逃亡中的雅各在梦中看见神的使者在天梯上上下往来，醒来后才知是神向他显现，神也一直在看顾着他。他就立起所枕的石头为柱，在那里敬拜神，并称那地为“伯特利”，意思就是“神的殿”。创造天地的至 高者是一位愿意与我们相亲的神，这真是何等地宝贵！

          这首诗发表于1840年，刚开始并没有受到太多人注意。直到1856年, 美国教会音乐及公立学校音乐教育之父梅森（Lowell Mason）为它谱曲后，才广受大家肯定及喜爱。据铁达尼号的生还者说，就在1,520人随船沉没之前，船上乐队演奏的正是这首圣诗。另外，1901年被 刺杀的美国总统麦坚理（W. Mckinley），在他临终前口中也喃喃说著：愿与主更亲近，更加亲近……后来全国都用此圣诗悼念他。这首诗歌也因此成为追思礼拜最常用的诗歌之一。

           人临终时如果心中、口中仍有诗歌，该是多么地美好！当那一天来到时，但愿我们也能唱着诗歌离开世界，奔向主怀。
