          在世僅43年的艾撒拉（Sarah Flower Adams，1805-1848）有一次應牧師的邀請，根據《創世記》28：10-22的記載，寫成了這首詩。逃亡中的雅各在夢中看見神的使者在天梯上上下往來，醒來後才知是神向他顯現，神也一直在看顧著他。他就立起所枕的石頭為柱，在那裡敬拜神，並稱那地為“伯特利”，意思就是“神的殿”。創造天地的至 高者是一位願意與我們相親的神，這真是何等地寶貴！

          這首詩發表於1840年，剛開始並沒有受到太多人注意。直到1856年, 美國教會音樂及公立學校音樂教育之父梅森（Lowell Mason）為它譜曲後，才廣受大家肯定及喜愛。據鐵達尼號的生還者說，就在1,520人隨船沉沒之前，船上樂隊演奏的正是這首聖詩。另外，1901年被 刺殺的美國總統麥堅理（W. Mckinley），在他臨終前口中也喃喃說著：願與主更親近，更加親近……後來全國都用此聖詩悼念他。這首詩歌也因此成為追思禮拜最常用的詩歌之一。

           人臨終時如果心中、口中仍有詩歌，該是多麼地美好！當那一天來到時，但願我們也能唱著詩歌離開世界，奔向主懷。
